After years of smoking, my mother had mouth surgery to remove cancer on her tongue and jaw. Even though my father had home health care nurses assisting each morning, he needed additional care in the afternoon and evening.

Paul and I talked it over and, after prayer, we felt this might be just what Shannon—and my parents—needed. In her junior year, we withdrew her from Kingwood High School and enrolled her in a private school just a few miles from my parent’s house. She moved into my childhood home (and bedroom) to care for my mother. With great respect and appreciation, I watched my daughter help her mammaw navigate the last year of her life with determination and dignity.

Sadly, I lost my mom to cancer in August of 1993—the same year Shannon graduated a year early from high school.
